A wild that holds its position across subsequent spins is a simple idea. Attach a multiplier to it and allow several to accumulate, and the arithmetic becomes the most consequential thing in the game — and the rules panel describes it in about two sentences.

What sticky means

The symbol remains on the grid for the rest of the feature round rather than disappearing when the reels spin again. Each subsequent spin therefore starts with the wild already in place, and additional wilds landing during the round accumulate alongside it.

By itself this raises the frequency of winning combinations without changing their size. The multiplier is what changes the size, and the interaction between the two is where the design lives.

The combination rule

When two multiplier wilds both participate in a winning combination, the rules will state either that the multipliers add or that they multiply. Two threes become six under the first and nine under the second. With four wilds present the gap between the two rules is very large, and it is stated in one clause that is easy to read past.

Finding the clause

Opening the demo version and reading the wild section rather than the trigger section takes about a minute and settles it. The three things to establish are the combination rule, the range of multiplier values available, and whether the wilds persist for the whole round or only for a set number of spins.

The persistence question matters as much as the arithmetic. A wild that sticks for three spins and then clears produces a very different round from one that holds until the feature ends, and both arrangements exist.

Why it produces high variance

Because the mechanic’s value depends on how many wilds accumulate, and that number follows a distribution with a long thin tail. Most feature rounds produce one or two, which is a modest outcome. A small proportion produce four or five with high multipliers, and those rounds carry a disproportionate share of the game’s total return.

The retrigger interaction

If a round can extend and the accumulated wilds carry into the extension, the compounding continues from where it was rather than restarting. That single detail extends the tail substantially, and games differ on it. The rules say which applies.

What it means for the base game

That it will be quiet. A feature capable of producing outcomes that large has to be funded, and the funding comes from ordinary rounds paying less than they would in a design without the mechanic. Anyone finding the base game unrewarding is observing the trade being made rather than a fault.
